Aloha Friday

Aloha Friday may have originated in Honolulu in the 1960’s out of the need for comfortable summer attire, but it has grown into a much larger experience, one that extends to many advocates around the globe.

The Aloha or Hawaiian shirt is an expression of the beauty and color of the Hawaiian Islands. Popularized by employees allowed to dress down on Aloha Fridays, it wasn’t long before the Aloha shirt became common attire for any day of the week. Not only did Hawaiian print visually brighten up the look of the office, alohawear also brought with it a positive mood. Eventually companies on the mainland recognized this appeal with employees and adopted the Hawaiian custom as casual Friday. The practice evolved even further with some companies such as Maui Jim encouraging a comfortable and open working environment every day.

Those familiar with Aloha Friday are sure to recognize the song made popular in the 80’s by Kimo Kahoano and Paul Natto called “It’s Aloha Friday, No Work ‘til Monday”. This song resonates with listeners eagerly anticipating a great weekend with family and friends. Why not make every weekend a three day weekend? Be spontaneous, live in the moment and be adventurous.

Today, Aloha Friday has grown globally through social media channels. Friends that share their fun experiences each Friday set the mood for the weekend plans through aspirational, colorful images that make you wish you were there. Whether it’s a photo of an afternoon at the beach, a tropical drink, or a great dinner with friends, #alohafriday brings with it smiles and positive thoughts.
