The Challenging Kaupo Hiking Trail of Maui

The Challenging Kaupo Hiking Trail of Maui

The Kaupo Trail is widely considered one of the most challenging. This strenuous trek promises plenty of phenomenal views and adventure. From sea to summit, the average hiker can complete the trail in 8 to 9 hours. The steep and overgrown terrain can be especially grueling, but the effort is worth it. Hikers are rewarded with spectacular scenery and a true wilderness experience.

This backcountry trail, located in Haleakala National Park, connects Paliku to Kaupo Ranch. Entrance fees are $15 if arriving on foot or $30 per vehicle. The 11.1-mile trail is rated “Difficult” by the Hiking Project as it gains some 6,387 feet in elevation.

Strenuous & Remote Trail for Physically Fit Hikers

Large sections of the trail offer little shade, and the signage is notoriously difficult to find in certain parts. Yet, despite the crazy ascents, steep descents, and overgrown brush, the intrepid can find their way. The trail has a unique mix of landscapes and microclimates, with dense brush at the bottom and a barren moonscape at the crater.

The Kaupo Trail is situated on the southern side of Haleakala. It begins at 900 feet above sea level and slowly winds up the volcano crater. It can be hiked as a one-way ascent or descent by arranging for vehicle pickup at the end. Camping is not allowed on the private Kaupo Ranch, so most hikers overnight in the cabins provided at the Paliku campground before heading out at dawn.

Tips for Hiking the Kaupo Trail

  1. Be prepared for a long day’s trek and wear hiking shoes with firm ankle support that are already broken in and fit well.
  2. Because it’s such an isolated trek, it’s better to hike with others.
  3. Pack for all possibilities. Layered clothing is best. Be sure to have a long-sleeve shirt and pants to help avoid scratches from thorny brush and protect against insects.
  4. Pack several liters of water and bring a portable filtration/treatment system so you can take advantage of the cisterns along the way.
  5. Hiking poles, electrolyte packets, and a neck gator can be useful.
  6. The weather can quickly change, from searing heat to rainy, chilly temperatures. Polarized hiking sunglasses are a must, along with a hat, sunscreen, and rain gear. Since the terrain and weather can vary so greatly, multiple pairs of sunglasses can make your day more enjoyable. Using dark lenses like Maui Jim Neutral Grey for bright sunny conditions and areas of little shade, and HCL Bronze or Maui Rose for cloudy, rainy conditions or areas of dense foliage can make your day much more visually enjoyable.
  7. When encountering trail intersections, look for National Park Service markers or ribbons. Use a GPS system for navigation when things get confusing. Many of today’s GPS watches will allow you to preload the route directly into your watch, making keeping you on trail extremely convenient.
  8. Food is not available inside the park, so pack your own.
  9. Bring a fully charged cell phone.
  10. If possible, bring along a hiker who already knows the Kaupo trail.
  11. Keep a lookout for local wildlife, including wild pigs, deer, goats, Hawaiian geese, and many species of endangered birds.

Hiking Sunglasses are Essential

Quality sunglasses in Maui are essential on the Kaupo Trail. Even on overcast days, the UV radiation is stronger at elevation and can prove harmful to your skin and eyes. For better comfort, visual acuity, and UV protection during longer hikes, consider polarized sunglasses for hiking by Maui Jim. The lenses feature PolarizedPlus2® technology that eliminates 100% of glare and protects your eyes from harmful rays.
