Eye Health: Digital Eye Strain
In September 2022, we launched an eye health series designed to help spread awareness and educate viewers on the many health benefits of quality sunglasses and prescription eyewear. Mahalo to Doctor AJ Contento from @Eye.Care.Unlimited for sharing his expertise on eye health and how Maui Jim eyewear is an important tool to help prevent irreversible damage to your eyes.
“Aloha, this Doctor Contento talking to you from the Boogie Down Bronx in New York, working with Maui Jim to talk to you about digital eye strain. And tips to eliminate digital eye strain and computer vision syndrome.
“We know that our bodies are meant to be in motion, and now we’re sitting down, so ergonomically we want to remind you that when you’re working with your phone or device. We want to work at a Harmon distance, or a natural angle. Not too close to the eye, usually where your arm is at a right angle.
“We talk about the 20-20 rule. The 20-20 rule is, for every 20 minutes of near-point stress, take a 20 second break, look at something 20 feet away, and then allow your eyes to refocus back at near.
“We also know that we tend to blink less. So as a result, if you’re not blinking 14,000 times a day, because you’re staring at your computer, you could supplement with an artificial tear, or just remind yourself to give a little forced blink now and then.
“We also know that there are blue light emissions that come from these devices, so we’re going to use different devices, different ways, and different filters, to block out those blue light emissions. Maui Jim Blue Light Protect™ is doing for us is blocking out those blue light emissions. Blue light affects our sleep patterns, our circadian rhythms, so by blocking out those blue light emissions, we’re decreasing some of those effects.
