What does “polarized” even mean?

Unlike other sunglasses that simply use tinted lenses to block out light, polarized sunglasses are designed to diminish the sun’s glare on water, snow, glass, pavement, and other reflective landscapes and objects. When you remove the glare, you’re left with more color, clarity and detail in everything around you. This is incredibly beneficial during outdoor activities. How are polarized lenses actually better for my eyes?
